LET’S … Learn about this breed….
USHER, M, Brussels Griffon…
Coloring Black with Silver markings.
WHO YOU TALKIN’ ABOUT ?!?!
BURSTING with personality!! The Brussels Griffon were developed in 19th century Belgium to catch rats in the stables. Eventually climbing in status to the companions of Belgian nobility. The Belgian Griffon, while small, can be quite hyperactive.
Descended from German Affenpinscher & Belgian street dog. Generally have a rough coat.
Do Brussels Griffons make good pets? Brussels Griffons are smart, friendly, little dogs with tons of personality, Best suited for owners who prioritize companionship and are prepared to spend a lot of time with their dog. They are considered “Velcro dogs” and do not like to be left alone for extended periods of time. However, they are perfect for families or households of just about any size, including those with other dogs or cats.
The Brussels Griffon is small, they are hardly a pampered pooch. Highly lively, intelligent, have a sense of humor, and an air of self-importance keeping them one step ahead of their people. They are purebred. They bond strongly with their pet parent, they also want to please. For the most part can be easy to train. As with many toy breeds, though, housebreaking may take some extra time and effort. Griffons have a very sensitive nature, they don’t respond well to harsh corrections or training methods.
The make good watch dogs given they tend to bark at noises outside the household, including strangers at the door, animals in the yard or strange noises around the home. They make excellent gundogs or family companions. With their sense of humor and lively nature, they are good match for an energetic family looking for a dog to be part of their daily activities.
Generally picks a favorite person but will play with anyone. Considered a cuddly, family-oriented breed. They often forget their size, and though they may weigh ten pounds, they possess a mastiff-sized personality.
GROOMING NEEDS:
LOW: Brussel Griffons shed little to no hair. Brush the coat a few times a week and check for any discharge or debris from the ears and eyes. They tend to be bushy and quite long hair. It’s one of the Brussels Griffon’s unique selling points, although it doesn’t require a lot of care. It is recommended that you regularly groom their beard to avoid them having a rather unpleasant smell.
Your cheerful little dog should be groomed on a regular schedule, in order to keep the harsh texture and vibrant color, the topcoat is maintained by hand stripping and rolling the coat by hand stripping and rolling the coat weekly.
Like any well-kept gentleman, the Brussels Griffon will need his beard combed regularly with a small metal comb. They should be brushed regularly because if their coat is not maintained, they tend to look disheveled and their hair becomes coarse. The should be brushed with a bristle brush and a metal tooth comb.
Like all flat-faced breeds, Brussel Griffons can experience breathing problems in sunny, hot, or humid weather, and usually snore.
SIZE: Typically stand 7 to 8 inches tall and weight 7 to 12 pounds. Occasionally, a Brussel Griffon will grow to be 20 pounds, a throwback to the breed’s larger ancestors.
EXERCISE: It’s recommended up to 30 minutes per day of exercise, although they are an energetic breed so can be walked for longer and will be happy with lots of playtime and exploring in the yard and/or garden throughout the day.
Griffons often lick, between the ages of one and three can get worse licking the feet, belly, folds of the skin, and ears can become affected by a skin allergy “atopy”. If licking of paws, rubbing of the face, and frequent ear infections worsen it is recommended to seek your veterinary for assistance. And like all small breeds… attention to teeth is of utmost importance. Life expectancy is 10-15 years.
